Profile: |
St Columb’s Hall Trust is breathing new life into one of Derry City’s most treasured landmarks — a Grade A listed, 45,000 sq ft civic asset built in the 1880s as “The People’s Hall”. Once a hub for refuge, education, debate, music, and cultural exchange. Decades of underinvestment left the building at risk, but since 2019 the Trust has led an ambitious regeneration to return it to full community use and ownership. The Hall is now open and being used on a meanwhile use basis while we raise the funds to completely renovate it. Our vision is rooted in social value: creating an inclusive, accessible space where heritage, creativity, and wellbeing intersect. The Hall includes an iconic events space, a creative therapy hub tackling trauma, addiction, mental health and dementia, a space for civic debate through “The People’s Panel” – a local citizens assembly and civic forum, and cinema space. These spaces generate measurable benefits — from improved mental health outcomes and skills development to increased footfall and economic activity in the city centre. The Trust also focuses on economic regeneration, employing local people who are considered to be economically inactive and providing training in caring for heritage assets. Our work fosters civic pride, strengthens social cohesion, and ensures local people are active co‑owners in shaping the community’s future. |
