Profile:

Home-Start Newry & Mourne was established in 1989 and is registered with the Charity Commission NI. (NIC106050). We are an independent organisation run by local trustees but we are affiliated to the national organisation Home-Start UK which provides the scheme with training, information and guidance and who quality assure our work. We operate in the Newry & Mourne District Council area which is a large mainly rural area with one city and a number of small towns and villages. It is recognised as an area of high need which has 3 Sure-Start projects – we are partners in 2 of those projects. We have our main office in Newry and we have an office in Kilkeel.

The scheme is managed by a board of Trustees (currently 8); we have 20 staff – two full-time and 18 part-time.

Home-Start supports families with at least one child under 5 who are experiencing difficulties. We offer one to one personalised support for parents and children. We believe parents play a key role in giving their children a good start in life and in helping them reach their full potential. The main part of our work is to support families in their own homes with trained volunteers. Throughout the years we have developed group work, and we have been running Family Groups for over 27 years. We also provide short term intensive home based support to families, via our Parenting Support workers who support families with issues like behavioural management, debt and mental health.
