Social Enterprises in the Supply Chain to Support Delivery of a Public Contract

When Stewarts Commercials won the contract to deliver vehicle repairs for the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, they wanted to diversify their supply chain to fulfil their social value requirements.

After undertaking market research, Stewart Commercial identified two Social Enterprises that they could include in their supply chain, Mug Shots and Orchardville Works.

Stewart Commercials commissioned Mugshots and Orchardville Works to deliver embroidered uniforms and other branded office supplies. Stewart Commercials engaged with Mugshots and Orchardville Works via the Social Value brokerage portal.

Orchardville Works Social Enterprise (part of Orchardville Society) provides on the job training opportunities to 60 participants per week to develop each individual’s employability skills in areas including Embroidery, Contract Hand Packing, Digital Printing, Garment Printing and Bulk Mailings, in a safe and supported working environment.

Mugshots is a small print and design workshop and are based in Hydebank Wood College. Mugshots work with young offenders to deliver training and qualifications around employability skills. Mugshots social mission is to support the reintegration of young offenders back into society. Their business model is set-up to generate income via their print and design workshop. Bursaries are made available to young offenders upon release to support them into sustainable employment.  In order to qualify for a bursary fund, the young offenders will have had to spend time working on commercial contracts while serving their sentence.

Michael was supported by Mugshots to work on the Stewart Commercial Contract. Upon release, Michael has secured employment with a well-known facilities management company. Michael aspires to become a site manager at his current employer, but before doing so, needs to gain his driving license. To help pay for that – Michael was able to apply and draw down a £250 bursary from the Mugshots fund based on the number of hours work experience gained while in Hydebank. Michael is currently taking his driving lessons.

The more commercial contracts Mugshots and Orchardville Works can win, the more support they can offer to their participants.
